If you guys think that your neighbourhood is safe, you are wrong. Crimes are happening when you guys are unaware of. You may not know when you will be their next target.
Recently, I came across an email which my friend sent me. He told me about a crime that he witnessed. He was parking his car at Block 10 level 3 multi-storey carpark at Vic Street and he saw people vandalising other people’s car by spraying paint and scratching on it. He hoped that I can help him by warning all of the neighbours to beware of such people.
Another friend of mine who was from republic polytechnic was just telling me about the incident which he witnessed firsthand about two months ago. He told me that the man looks quite old, between 30s. He is an Indian, about 165 tall, have very thick eyebrows, one of his eyes has a scar. He wore blue polo tees and black long pants. He had a tattoo on his right hand and he is wearing a swatch watch.
Another few neighbours also had either witnessed the incidents or they are the victims of vandalism. Some say it happened two years ago while others say months or even weeks. This also means that there are still very high crime rates.
I consulted Corporate Lim who is a young police from the neighbourhood police post. He give me some tips on how to prevent vandalism. Below are some of the tips he told me. For more information on crime prevention, you can contact him at SGPolicCPLLim@email.com.
Tips on how to prevent vandalism:
• Lock the doors and close the windows when you leave your car, however long you are leaving it for
• When parking at home, always use your garage if you have one and lock both your vehicle and your garage. If you don't have a garage, try to park in a well-lit, open place
• When parking outside, always try to park your car in an attended car park. Look for a public car park which is part of the police approved Safer Parking scheme and displays the Park Mark® brand. Some car parks also have ‘Secure Car Park' accreditation – look for the sign
• Don't leave anything on display. Even an old coat or plastic bag can be a tempting target for a thief
• Remove the stereo if you can
• Don't keep valuables or important documents in the glove box. Leave the glove box open to show there's nothing inside
• Tuck in wing mirrors and put the aerial down to discourage vandals
• Never store your car's documents in the car
• A Thatcham-approved immobiliser or steering lock can help secure older vehicles
• Have the windows etched with the car's vehicle registration number (VRN) and make a note of its chassis number
• Keep your car keys in a safe place, even in your house, so that someone breaking-in cannot steal your car too
• Get an alarm fitted. Alarms can deter thieves not only from stealing your vehicle, but also from taking items from it.
• Secure your wheels using locking wheel nuts
• Mark all equipment, e.g. car stereo, with your car registration number
So, hope you all can do your part as a resident, keep a lookout for the people who vandalised. Prevent them from vandalising your car or neighbour’s cars. Calls 999 to report them and reduce the crime rates, thus, keep the neighbourhood safe.
